Working Together as a Team to Ensure Successful Learning Everyday
PHYSICAL EDUCATION INFORMATION
Welcome to a new and exciting year at Metzler Elementary. We enjoy working with your children and we would like to emphasize the following for the 2021-2022 school year.
GOALS/OBJECTIVES: Physical Education is seen as an integral part of the total educational experience of your child and as such contributes to the development of the total individual – socially, intellectually, physically, morally, and emotionally. In order for your child to learn how to lead a healthy lifestyle, our goal is to get them moving. We do this through a variety of activities and games. In order to attain these goals, we are asking for your help in maintaining some basic principles in the Metzler Elementary P.E. Department.
SAFETY: All reasonable safety measures are used to prevent accidents. Students are required to observe all P.E. safety rules. Off task behavior, which becomes a hazard to other students, will not be permitted. All injuries must be reported to the instructor. No one is allowed to use any piece of equipment unless the instructor has given permission. The whistle will be used to gain immediate silence. (The students are to stop, look, and listen when they hear a whistle.) Appropriate Apparel: Please help us keep your student safe by making sure that they wear athletic type shoes, with laces or Velcro, for a snug fit. Athletic shoe must be completely cover the foot. Examples of shoes that will NOT be allowed and result in the student not participating are: flats, sandals, flip-flops, Crocs, Sperrys, Toms, Bobs, dress shoes, boots, slip on, and backless shoes. Also, we encourage girls to wear shorts under dresses or skirts. If your child wears inappropriate apparel they will not be allowed to participate for their own safety, which could affect their participation grade.
EXCUSES FROM PARTICIPATION: It is the Klein I.S.D. policy that any student not able to participate in P.E. class activities must present a written excuse from his/her parent or guardian. This note is good for only three (3) days. After three days, a doctor's excuse is required. You may have the doctor fax it to us as well. All notes need to be dated. Please include your name, your child's first and last name, homeroom teacher's name and the reason for the excuse. If your child is not able to participate in P.E., please make sure they understand they will not be able to participate in recess activities also. Please be sure to notify the school nurse, your child's teacher, and P.E. teacher if there is any physical condition, which would limit your child's physical activity in high activity games.
EQUIPMENT: Equipment for physical education class is supplied by Klein I.S.D and is for use, not abuse. The equipment is also limited in supply, and care by students is required in order to give the equipment longer life.
GRADING: At Metzler Elementary, Physical Education is regarded as an important part of your child's education. Please understand that P.E. is not recess or playtime.
The concepts of movement education, sportsmanship, self-discipline and kinesthetic awareness are all valuable experiences in the growth of your child. To measure the learning in these areas, your child will receive two grades each nine weeks in the following categories of evaluation.
CONDUCT & PARTICIPATION: The nine weeks conduct grade is based on the number of times the student is marked down in the grade book for that nine weeks grading period. E = Excellent 1 or less time S = Satisfactory 3 or less times N = Needs Improvement =4 or more times U = Unsatisfactory 5 or more times. The nine weeks participation grade is based on the student's effort applied, skill/knowledge learned, and actual participation. In other words the participation grade is not dependent upon ability, but rather upon willingness to work to the best of one's ability. (This is for grades 3-5)
Participation and development grades in K-2 are based on a checkmark system and conduct grades are the same as the above system.
PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST: We will administer the FitnessGram test to grades 3-5 in the spring. Children will receive a report regarding their test results.
We are looking forward to a great year. Thanks for your time and cooperation. We appreciate all your support.
